Homemade Apple Pie Applesauce

This should probably be referred to as apple pie applesauce, because well that’s kind what it is! It is a blended version of apple pie filling, which totally beats plain applesauce with cinnamon out of the park. Warmed up on a cold day this really hits the spot. 

Type of apple matters, now maybe contrary to what others might preach I don’t always exclusively use a saucing apple for apple sauce. I like to keep some texture intact. Some apple will cook down to a very fine thin apple sauce due to internal cell structure. Think more like the texture of baby food. So you are in charge of your apples here. I have selected Honeycrisp and Granny Smiths. If the apple tastes gross/is mealy before you put it in sauce you aren’t going to like it in sauce either. I tend to like to pick at least one type of apple with some touch of tartness, it really helps to balance the final product. I also tend to like things like Ida Reds, Jonathan, Braeburn, Northern Spy, Pink Lady, Cortland. However, a more traditional apple to use could be a McIntosh, or Macoun. We are going to sweeten this recipe so I’d hold off on a Fuji or a sweet profile apple. Again, please pass over things like golden delicious and red delicious. There are far better apples out there, you will thank yourself for using better apples.

Description

A cinnamon applesauce that taste like the center of the most amazing apple pie. 

Ingredients
  • 4 Apples (see notes above)
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tbsp White sugar
  • 1 tbsp Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 pinch Salt
Instructions
  1. Prepare the apples

    Wash and peel, core and slice the apples into small pieces. We want them to cook pretty quickly over the stove.

  2. Combine the spices

    Add the cinnamon, white sugar, brown sugar, flour, butter and salt. Mix to fully combined and all the apples are coated. 

  3. Cook the applesauce

    Add the apples and the water to a saucepan. Place over medium low heat. Stir often at the start to prevent the apples from burning. As the release their juices you can cook less. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the apples are to your tenderness. 

  4. Blend the applesauce

    Using a stick blender pulse until as smooth as you like. You can go as chunky or as smooth as you like.
